PURPOSE STATEMENT

This position is responsible for assisting certificated staff by performing instructional support tasks related to the students' educational development within the total school environment and by being a positive role model for students.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Provide instructional support for IEP students by attending to the program needs including reading, writing, math and social/behavior skills.
  2. Provide support and structure for students needing behavior and social skills support.
  3. Assist students in developing functional skills leading to independence.
  4. Implement and reinforce social skills training programs.
  5. Assist certificated staff with required record-keeping, development of materials and preparation of teaching aids.
  6. Learn instructional techniques under the direction of a teacher and independently carry out instructional programs developed by the supervising teacher.
  7. Collaboratively work with classroom teachers.
  8. Assist in assessing students.
  9. Perform routine tasks in monitoring and assisting student progress in the classroom and other school activities.
  10. Assist certificated staff with required record keeping.
  11. Promote positive public relations when communicating with the public.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  1. Perform routine classroom and building clerical tasks as needed.
  2. May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams.
  3. Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports to the building administrator.
  • Receives direction and guidance from other designated staff to include classroom teacher(s).

MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Required to deal with a wide range of student, staff and public behaviors and needs in a positive and service oriented manner.
  • May experience shifts in work schedule or work site according to district needs.
  • May occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students or parents.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Amount of standing, sitting and walking will vary depending on the age of students and classroom assignments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • AA Degree, 72 college level credits, or ability to pass the Federal Para-Educator test.
  • Experience working with students in an educational setting and/or evidence of an interest in supporting learning experiences.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and how this influences behavior, and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others.
  • Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff, students, and patrons of the district.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents – including phone and email communication.
  • Possess the desire to be a role model for students and to interact positively with students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the public.

Licenses/Special Requirements

  • Must provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or obtain a religious or medical exemption.
  • Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor.
  • Must complete Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire.
  • Required to attend training for de-escalation procedures.
  • May require a CPR/First Aid card depending on job assignment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Para Educator on the PSE Classified Salary Schedule A
  • 6.5 hours per day, 5 days per week, 189 days per school year; district may revise assignment and job location as needed.
